Justice And Peace

Our little Chapel in Norfolk has this motto for the year

"What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?"  Micah 6: 8

I have thought about this so much in the past few days, as I have watched the citizens pf the USA respond to the terrible death of George Floyd. Bless tells me that where she lives, they have had curfews imposed. One of our members here has a son who is a Pastor working in downtown Minneapolis. Racism is evil. So is violence.

Liz sent me a quote from Ben Franklin

And I remembered another from Martin Luther King

Let us pray for justice, kindness and humility. And may those who mourn be comforted.

  1. Thank you, Angela. We continue under curfew for a second day (Sunday) in my city and other cities are also having curfews; the county has declared a state of emergency. I've heard reports that some of the violence, the destruction of property, the arson, and the looting, are instigated by people with another agenda, but, I don't know that for sure.

  2. The BBC news has suggested that there are many people making peaceful protests & as you say, those with another agenda of looting & civil unrest etc. Keep safe, dear friend x

    1. I saw a video where 2, what I suspect are, white girls in black hoodies and black face masks spray painted "Black Lives Matter" onto a Starbucks and the black lady who was filming them was outraged, telling them, "Don't do that! We're not trashing things and they're going to think Black people are doing this! Please stop". The girls ignored them and said they were helping.

    2. This is SO hard. People need to think before they act. They interviewed a guy at Lulworth Cove after the 'tombstoning' incident. He said to the reporter "Just look at all these people, I really dont know why they have crowded onto the beach like this" - and I wondered why the reporter didnt say "But YOU are here, what makes you any different?"

  3. Whilst I understand the terrible events that started the protest I cant help thinking its a perfect storm thanks to many if frustrations like the COVID situation as well. People were ready to explode over something and Mr.Floyd was the straw that broke the camels back as they say

    1. I am so angry that there was a PEACEFUL protest in Washington, and Trump sent in riot police to break it up - and the police punched cameramen filming the incident. And then, when everyone had gone, the president went and stoodf in front of the Church and waved a Bible. He had not even had the grace to ask the Bishop if it was ok to stand there and use the building as a backdrop. He has distorted the truth, which adds to the unrest...

  4. That Micah quote is one of my favourites and I love those two other quotes as well. I've been inundated with messages on Instagram telling me to educate myself, educate others, share messages etc. Definitely want to educate myself but I just don't want to make a massive sound about it like everyone else, it feels tokenistic saying it before doing it. It feels like Peer pressure- this may be a good thing in this case, but I'm not really good at giving into peer pressure.

    1. I too have been bombarded with messages, sign this, support that, etc - maybe Micah's words are particularly helpful here. If we seem to 'walk humbly before God' then he will guide our footsteps and our actions towards the right way.
