Ice, But No Water

Thank you all for your kind words. Bob has continued to get stronger, and preached a great sermon this morning.
It has been a good weekend.

Saturday afternoon it was lovely to have the girls at Cornerstones. Jess did Spirograph, while Rosie sorted all the pens for me.
Then the Ice Cream van stopped right outside. Treats all round!
I had a friend who told her son that unless the van stopped outside and the driver rang their doorbell and asked if John Smith wanted an ice cream he couldn't have one. And I knew another Mum who said when the van played a tune it meant "I've run out of ices, returning to depot" [And it was not because they could not afford it - I felt it was not kind to mislead children like that]
The girls heard the chimes, but did not ask for ices - so I was really delighted to treat the family. We had fun choosing, and they were delicious and creamy.
Sunday we got home from church to find no water in the taps - a water main had burst in the heat and hundreds of homes locally were cut off for over 8 hours. I checked our neighbours were OK, especially the older ones and those with pets. It was SO hot! Then we went over to the family at their cottage, where the taps all worked! We returned in the
evening with a large bottle of tap water, just in case. The water was back, but pressure still low.
It was an inconvenience, but only a minor one. And a reminder that 99.9% of the time we have fresh, clean water on tap. Some people will have to walk miles today in  blazing heat to get a bucket of dirty water to meet the needs of their family.
Lord make us truly grateful.
10.30am Woke to find water off again, no details about when it will be back. Used bucket of water from garden water butt for loo flushing. Now off to Liz to refill bottles!

  1. Glad you had a great weekend, and Bank Holiday Monday still to come...
We twinned our toilet; like you we received a certificate and photograph which had a global map reference. I was able to find the location somewhere in the Democratic Republic of Congo; I wonder if it is still there after all these years? Clean water and reliable sanitation is such a privilege.

    1. We chose Malawi because in 2008 Steph went there for three weeks with Unicef. I wonder if our tap is still there...

  2. It is a big shock when the supply is interrupted and you realise how many times you use it every day.

  3. Clean water is such a blessing, it should be to everyone. Water Aid is a worthy charity and does a lot of good. I am so pleased Bob is better and all went well at church. Lovely time with your lovely granddaughters. It is very hot here but there is a sea breeze and I am truly grateful. I hope you have a good bank holiday. Regards Sue H

  4. Sorry to hear about the water situation. We have to be careful in the motorhome with water so that we don’t have to come of our pitch to refill. We have 5 litre containers for drinking water and toothbrushing. I am thankful for clean tap water and always offer a cool drink to delivery drivers, postie, the men who empty the bins in hot weather. Catriona

  5. Pleased to read Bob's health is improving. How lucky for you that you could fetch water from Liz's cottage. Hopefully by now running water will have been restored. Xx

  6. So glad to hear the water is back on. It does us good once in a while to really think about how convenient it is. Must be terribly hard on the elderly who live alone when it goes off.

  8. We have a deep well and our pump is dependent on electricity so sometimes after a storm we lose power and water. We are fortunate to have a generator. It is so unfair that so many have no access to clean water, while many waste it in the developed world.

    1. I get quite irritated if I visit the toilets in public buildings and find someone has left the tap running!

  10. It's definitely not a good time to lose your lovely fresh tap water is it. But it does make you appreciate how lucky we are to have it most of the time.

  11. I'm glad your water service was restored and hope there aren't any further disruptions. I'm also sorry that you are experiencing a heatwave. It's cold here (10C) currently, and I have the heating on. :)

  12. Thank you for the reminder of how blessed we are to have fresh water every day (at least most of the time). It's easy to forget that for some areas of the world this is not the case.
