Take The High Road

We are actually going away on holiday today! I still cannot quite believe this. A proper holiday, staying in a self-catering cottage - not stopping with friends or relations [or sleeping on an airbed in the back of the Skoda]. And we are going out of the country - OK, just Scotland so we don't need a passport.
It is around 400 miles- so an early start. But we plan to take it easy and enjoy the scenery. I have no idea if I will post very much whilst I am away [although there is WiFi at the cottage] We will be staying in Perthshire, in Crieff.

Here is Crieff Hydro not far from our cottage. But I shall say here and now, we won't be visiting there. As Rosie once said in a Charity shop "It is very nice, but it is outside my budget!"
We have no definite plans - but I've been muttering about visiting the V&A in Dundee and seeing the Falkirk Boat Lift.
"Take the High Road" was a soap opera set in the fictional scottish village of Glendarroch. It ran for 23 years from 1980 - 2003, My mother watched it. Having been a student, with Dad, in Glasgow in the late 1940s, Mum had a great fondness for Scotland.
Any suggestions for Scottish places worth visiting?
Our National Trust Tickets work north of the Border, even if our OAP bus passes don't.

  1. I was born in Dundee and grew up in Blairgowrie in Perthshire. Personally, I can't get excited about the V&A, but the RRS Discovery right next door is fascinating and well worth a visit! As is the Verdant Works museum about Dundee's jute heritage. If you go to Falkirk, do go and see the Kelpies too. Dunkeld is lovely, and you could also go to Fife and visit St Andrews and some of the little fishing villages such as Crail. Enjoy your holiday! Pam

  2. Thank you Pam. We went to the Verdant Works about 20 years ago, I loved it. We had a couple of weeks in St Andrews and enjoyed Fife then. The Kelpies will go on my list now!

  7. I should also have said that Luss by Loch Lomond was the set for Glendarroch. It's a lovely little village. If you go there head across to Helensburgh just 15 minutes away and visit the Charles Rennie MacIntosh house. Helensburgh also has some great charity shops. Margaret

  9. It's a long time since we were there but The Discovery was fascinating but as a toddler the lifelike displays traumatised Emma! St Andrews was nice and I seem to remember visiting a Deer park but can't remember details. Have a wonderful time and enjoy time to yourselves.

  10. We have the same problem when we go south-NT acceptable, Scottish travel card not! Falkirk Wheel is a marvellous feat of engineering as are The Kelpies. Crieff is a nice town and you would probably enjoy a look round Remake Scotland (2 Crieff Visitor Centre, Muthill Road. Crieff. It’s a treasure trove of items being saved from landfill. Pitlochry is not too far and a lovely town too. Enjoy your holiday-we are heading south next week!!We’ll meet one day. Catriona

  11. Enjoy! I loved Scotland when I was there. That was back in the 80s and I was in Edinburgh.

  12. Oh you lucky duck!
I absolutely love Perthshire and have holidayed there often.
In fact I love everywhere in Scotland, we go up to Inverness as often as we can, have been across to Skye a few times, there's nowhere that I don't love!
If you travel to Fife, Anstruther is known for great fish & chips! My husband never has battered fish when we're there, he chooses smoked cod or haddock, it's ever so slightly pink, and delicious.
If you do decide to go to Dundee, and if you like smoked fish, try to find time to travel a bit further to Arbroath for a 'Smokie'. They're wonderful!
Pitlochry is a lovely small town, and the Dam and Salmon Ladder is really interesting. Quite a lot of small independent shops in Pitlochry too.
Dunkeld is a lovely town too.
Glamis Castle is great for a day out. Although it's technically a stately home, it has a very friendly feel to it. It actually feels like someone's real 'home'.
If you can, visit Blair Castle, it's superb!
One thing you must do, eat some wild Venison. The Loft Restaurant in Bridge of Tilt, not far outside Pitlochry does wonderful food, I can't recommend it highly enough!
Make sure to visit a Distillery too, Edradour, near Pitlochry is a good one. I don't drink Scotch, but it's still a great place to go. I know they suffered during the pandemic, and am not sure whether they have fully opened again yet.
Above all, have a wonderful time, and I'll order some of our usual Scottish good weather for you. We've only ever been rained on twice! X

  13. The V&A will appeal to your Prince of Lathes, especially the wooden infrastructure. It's a marvellous feat of arborial engineering. If you go to St. Andrews I shall wave to you from across the water (Firth of Forth)!Enjoy your trip. I know you'll make the most of every minute.
