Trees, Tractors And Teachers

Our trip to the Gressenhall Museum on Mayday was just splendid. Rosie and Jess were cheerful and well behaved the whole time. We began in the "Cherry Tree Cottage" where my friend Jane from the Monday Craft Group was teaching children how to make "Blossom Buttons". Rosie soon got the hang of stacking 7 pink petal shapes and stitching them together. The centre was finished with a bead, and the threads knotted for stamens. A safety pin meant it was easy to attach to her collar. Meanwhile Grandad showed Jess the 1930's room and the cottage garden.
There was a basket of 'workbelts' for the children to wear as they walked round outside. Each was equipped with items for a nature walk - a list of items to find [leaves, insects, stones, spiders web etc] and a magnifying glass. Also a tape measure, some silicon cake cases, and more. The cases were for you to put a creature in so you could hold and observe it safely without it scuttling away!
Such a well thought out idea!
Rosie was keen to visit the schoolroom again, and gave us a lesson from the teacher's desk. Jess happily sat and listened as the story was read.

And Jess also sat at the piano and played us a 'tune'

We enjoyed snacks at the woodland playground, and then went to play on the tractors. Again, good planning - two sizes of tractor for the children to ride.
The blossom was pretty, and in one tent children were invited to make a paper pot and plant a tiny Scots Pine seedling. Rosie was very proud of hers and named it Bonnie.
Two years ago, I recycled Liz's Boden cashmere sweater which had many moth holes.
Rosie initially wore it as a tunic dress with leggings- but she's grown taller and now wears it as a jumper. The little bee doing her dance away from the flower seemed very appropriate for our morning's activities. I'm thrilled that this garment has had so much wear first for Liz and then for Rosie.

Rosie wanted to look inside the museum at a few exhibits, so we did that fairly quickly as it was almost time to go home. We walked back to the carpark and just got strapped in when the rain started. The four of us really enjoyed our time together.
The staff and volunteers at the Museum really work hard to make these special days good for visitors of all ages, and I am grateful to them.
It is a lovely resource to have on our doorstep.
Is there a place near you which you would recommend for a family day out?

  1. What a wonderful day out! I really enjoyed Jess's piano playing! She plays better than I do! I thought I recognized the embroidery you did on Rosie's sweater from when you mended it!

    1. Each time we visit, the piano has fewer keys which work, and it is even more out of tune - but the children love it.

  2. What a brilliant place. I was admiring Rosie's bag and thinking how practical it was before I read that part of the post.
The cashmere jumper looks a great success too.

    1. We have a season ticket for the Norfolk Museums, and we really get our money's worth

  3. That sounds a thoroughly well-thought-out but educational day. I love the toolbelt idea! Rosie 's cashmere jumper looks so nice on her and I did love your adaptation!
By the way, you said, 'The four of us' but do you mean 5? Ang, Bob, Liz, Rosie, Jess? Kxx

    1. Plans changed - it was just us two and the grandchildren. Jess adores her Grandad, so the absence of Mummy didn't cause tears!

You're wearing your hair longer. You look charming and lovely.

It looks like a perfect grandparent kind of day. I think it's important that kids bask in the unconditional love and patience of grandparents. We're much more able to be present and in wonder and delight of grandchildren than we were our own children, don't you agree? Every child should know the feeling of being adored.

    1. Thank you for the compliment. My hair is in much better condition since I stopped dyeing it. Being a grandparent is a delight - the joys of being with these children, without many of the responsibilities of day to day childcare

  8. I was pleased that Rosie remembered previous visits and spoke about the things she enjoyed - and the one thing she didn't - the pale moustachioed shopkeeper mannequin in the Post Office . She said he was spooky, I whispered to Bob he looked like Hitler.

  9. So I’m a bit confused. In the last paragraph you say “Liz wanted to look inside the museum” but in one of your replies to comments you say that it was only the four of you and mention “the absence of Mummy”. Was it Rosie who wanted to look in the museum?

    1. Yes, it was Rosie! I didn't proof read thoroughly before I hit publish! And (like many grans) I frequently address the girls by the wrong names (Liz, Steph, Rosie, Jess) They only worry when I call them Charlie (our dog who died in 2009)

  10. That first photo of Rosie, she looks like a small version of you! Did she make Granddad Bob stand in the corner, in the schoolroom? Jess is quite the little pianist! What a successful day out for you all.

    1. It certainly looks as though she's told Bob to behave! [is this what you mean by a small version of me?]

  11. 😀 No, it was the way she is standing in the first photo, there must have been a photo once where I saw you standing in the same pose!
