Hello, Dolly!

"I need a dolly" said Bob.

And you realise how crazy our language is. If he had said it to Rosie, she might have thought of Baby Annabel
Having recently visited a Museum with an ancient laundry, I might have thought of one of these tools for beating the dirt out of the washing.

It's Harvest Festival time, and many of my friends will weave a corn dolly to decorate the church.

But no, what he actually wants is another one of these nifty little gadgets for moving large tools round the lathe Palace!

Aren't Barbra Streisand's outfits amazing? Not that one could stroll round this village dressed like that!

  1. I told my husband that Bob wants a dolly, and he immediately thought of panel beating dollies!
I thought of the dolly tub and peg for laundry, but couldn't imagine what Bob would want that for!

    1. This is why I love our language - I'd forgotten the panel beating dolly - a solid curved shape you put behind the dent when you bash it out. Thanks

  2. You do wonder how things get these names.

  3. And there began my lifelong admiration for La Streisand!(my father couldn't stand her singing, said she didn't sing, she shouted!). I have a funny story about when I went to see her a few years ago at the 02 but I'll leave that for another day - suffice to say, it was the highlight of my year! She actually came to my neck of the woods on her honeymoon with James Brolin and must have driven right past my door! My brother-in-law was the nightporter at the hotel where they stayed and the entire staff were sworn to secrecy about their visit. Anyhoot, hope Bob gets his trolley dolly!

    1. It must be hard for some people to get privacy - she has such a distinctive appearance too.

  4. He could also have the wooden bit which sits on top of a tent pole after it has been inserted through the canvas and from which the gut ropes run out.

  5. No, I guess you and I couldn't stroll around our villages dressed like Barbara Streisand, but wouldn't you just love to own one of those gorgeous hats?

    1. Oh yes- but I am not quite tall enough to carry it off. I'd look like a toddler at the dressing up box

  6. The dolly I have for moving heavy items is metal, has a small platform on two wheels and two long handles with cross bars; you place the items to be moved on the platform, tilt the dolly backwards and wheel it where you want to move the items to. :)

  7. Our Dolly was constructed from my husband’s 1950s roller skates about 50 years ago. They seem to do the job.
