I Fell Into A Brown Study...

This is a wonderful archaic term, dating back to the 1500s. "A Brown Study" is defined as a state of deep thought, absorption or abstraction. I heard my parents use it a few times, [accompanied with laughter] I was totally wrong about Pantone choosing green for their COTY2025  [Color of the year] They have chosen a brown shade, called Mocha Mousse.
"A warming brown hue imbued with richness, it nurtures us with its suggestion of the delectable qualities of chocolate and coffee answering our desire for comfort."
To be honest I'm totally underwhelmed by this choice! Having got married in the 70s, to decorate my home in shades of brown feels a rather retro step. And I'm still using the brown towels from 1979, and my big brown M&S oval tea tray.
Bob's IKEA Poang armchair is covered in chocolate brown leather.
When I had longer, glossy brown hair, I wore brown clothes... but apart from one plain teeshirt, and my new elegant pj's, I'm not sure I have any brown garments...
But I'm very happy to serve good brown food and drink
  • Decent fresh coffee
  • Drinking chocolate with added cocoa
  • Chocolate mousse
  • Boeuf bourguignon
  • Steak and kidney pie filling
Also a quick mention for chocolate profiteroles, Costa's mocha cortado, marmite on toast [ I miss Chocobee
The Guardian has posted loads of lovely brown pictures - but I can't see myself changing my existing decor. I'll just drink more coffee, and hope for dark chocolates at Christmas...and think deeply in a brown study!

  2. I shan't be changing my wardrobe to the new/old colour... my boarding school uniform was brown... a hated brown tweed pleated skirt (guaranteed to make one feel chuuby) and a matching brown tweed loose cut coat. With a horrible mustard coloured corduroy cap, vaguely 1960s in style. No browns now in my wardrobe!

    1. That sounds dire! Didn't Enid Blyton choose brown for the Mallory Towers uniform. I must check with Rosie

  3. I don't mind wearing brown. I have brown trousers and a brown cashmere jumper. Wouldn't have brown walls though! We've got a pigeon grey hallway though! Kx

    1. My first flat in 1977 had three orange walls and one brown one! All on horrid woodchip paper. The bathroom was "mushroom" a sludgy grey/brown.

  4. Like Kirsten, I suffered brown school uniform, the old fashioned tunic, cream blouse, brown blazer/coat/pudding basin hat...... We were charmingly known as The Brown Cows by the other schools. Definitely no brown in my wardrobe!

    1. Eeew! Definitely a uniform to cause embarrassment. I've checked up. Mallory Towers DID have a brown uniform, with orange hat and and orange sash round the tunic. In Canterbury the pupils at the Simon Langton Girls and Simon Langton Boys Schools were known as the Slugs and the Slobs!

  5. I have one pair of brown trousers, not one of my favourite colour choices. I do like very dark chocolate though 70% and higher cocoa solids. I also like shiny chestnuts and brunette hair, and brown eyes are lovely, so maybe it's growing on me but not for decor. Regards Sue H

  6. I've not heard of a brown study, but, "mocha mousse" sounds rather delicious! Of course, my skin is brown and so are my eyes. :)

  7. Wow-Deja vu for that colour. Along with some mustard and orange, this was our first colour scheme in 1971! Catr

  8. I'm ahead of Pantone, as I decorated my living room with orange and brown wallpaper, and had G plan chairs re-upholstered in brown fabric in the Summer. I love brown, and orange too!

  9. Our first house ( Chicago suburb)was built in 1961 and one bathroom was the awful salmon pink . We replaced the sink, the toilet and the tiles and had the bath professionally refinished in dark chocolate brown. It looked lovely but every single water dropped showed up! Finally we had it redone again in cream which was so much better. JanF

    1. We had an avocado suite once, and a weird pink one too. But as our homes always belonged to the church, we had to live with the colours!

  10. Not much brown here, unless it is chocolate in any shape or form! 😍
