Log Cabin

I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,
And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made:
Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honey-bee,
And live alone in the bee-loud glade.

And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow,
Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings;
There midnight's all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow,
And evening full of the linnet's wings.

I will arise and go now, for always night and day
I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore;
While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements grey,
I hear it in the deep heart's core.

No cabin by Lake Innisfree- but I have made three pieces of Log Cabin patchwork, as that is one of the skills we are teaching at Sewing Club this term. I did two ‘conventionally’ with two strips light and two dark – and one in just random shades of blue and turquoise. They may end up as cushion covers for cornerstones as many of these scraps were left over from the two quilts I made for the single beds there.

Yeats wanted beans and bees by his cabin. If I had such a cabin I should want to grow potatoes and keep chickens.

  1. Oh, that is one of my favourite poems. I've loved the images it creates in my mind since we first read it at school when I was about 14.

  4. I'd have potatoes and beans. I'm afraid I'd name the chickens. That would be the end of drumsticks on my table. ~Liz

  5. Your patchwork is lovely Angela, I particularly like the first one you have shown, and they would make gorgeous cushions.

  6. If you made one more you could attach them together and make a lovely wall hanging. No idea why that popped into my head but I thought I would share :)

  9. I really like the Log Cabin pattern, I did some blocks with primary colors for the darks and pastel colors for the lights, I rather liked the effect. I enjoy how the overall pattern in a log cabin quilt changes depending on how you set the blocks.

    We grow potatoes and keep chickens :) I really love our brown eggs. I am looking to take a bee keeping class in February, so perhaps one day I will also keep bees.

  11. Yeats, oh I love Yeats. Sligo a bit too far for a day trip, unfortunately... Apparently the real Innisfree is little more than a rock in the lake, but you can sail past nonetheless!
