Let A Smile Be Your Umbrella...

...On A Rainy Day
That was Perry Como's philosophy anyway. The weather has certainly changed around here. We are 'battening down the hatches' in the back garden. The covers have gone onto the garden bench and the BBQ. Chairs have been placed neatly in the summerhouse.
Last spring I attempted to repair the folding chairs by putting fresh covers over the original black ones which were splitting at the seams. Sadly the striped fabric is now giving way along the seams too. I removed it.
The umbrella which slots through the hole in the centre of the patio table has been removed and dismantled for storage.
Bob realised the 'vent' section has developed a lot of holes. I decided to use the striped cloth to replace the damaged section
I hope this repair lasts longer than the 2023 chair repair!

  1. Too bad the chair covers started to tear; maybe you might need to replace them every year. But, you did a great job with the umbrella fix and hopefully, it will last for several years.

    1. I cannot work out why the chair seats keep splitting (it is not because the people in them are too heavy!)

  2. Pouring here today and I have a Trustee meeting in Glasgow! At least the chairs lasted another year and you may be able to use the fabric for something else. Catriona

    1. I think I need to investigate stronger fabric. The frames are really solid and well made

  3. I love make do and mend. Great re-use of fabric. Pity about the chair seats, especially as the frames are so strong. I am sure you will come up with something. Regards Sue H

  4. Is the cotton thread used for stitching rotting? Perhaps a polyester and a polyester thread may last longer?

  5. The umbrella repair looks good! You might need a fabric like heavy outdoor canvas for the chairs. Sunlight can degrade fabrics. My sister made me some cushions for my porch furniture, and the ones made of the canvas outdoor fabric have lasted very well. It's been 5 years now.

  6. I think I need to rethink both fabric AND thread used!

  7. Maybe there is a spray that you could use to protect the fabric?

  10. Maybe canvas of some description will do for your chairs, some will probably turn up on your travels. I treated myself to an orchid in a pot today to cheer me up, the house selling/buying saga is still ongoing. I'm never moving again! Hugs Xx

    1. A bit of canvas will come my way sometime before next summer, I am sure, Enjoy your orchid. Moving is SO stressful

  11. I think water resistant canvas and a sturdy polyester thread would be good. Cotton seems to disintegrate both with sunshine and age! Pound fabrics have their canvas at just over half price at the moment, other shops are available!

  12. I guess the covers couldn't be removed when the chairs weren't in use? I have been taking the folding chair cushions off our patio set and storing them in the deck box, even if we will need them a few hours later, because I don't trust the sun on any fabric! It's a nuisance to do, but they would be expensive to replace. However, since the cushions are not protecting the vinyl struts on the chair forms, these have split and some have had to be replaced. You can't win!
