Taking The Pill

PILL: A ball of fibres formed on the surface of a textile by rubbing. Colloquially known as a bobble, fuzzball or lint ball.

Since discovering my 'new' jumper last month, I have been wearing other cardis back-to-front. And the colder weather has meant more knitwear in general. But when I came to put away my Xmas Jumper, I noticed there was a lot of pilling, bizarrely under the arms. I checked out all the jumpers - it was a common problem. I suspect it is friction when these things are worn under jackets. As 'make do and mend' is important, I finally [after years of dithering] order a "Defuzzer" I'm very pleased with the results. A gentle circular motion removed surface 'pills' without damaging the sweater itself.

I'm especially pleased with the visible improve- ment on this sweater dress passed by Steph in 2022

This jumper is ten years old, and looks much better now. The gadget comes with cleaning brush and spare blade.

It has a charging lead, which stores neatly inside the 'fluff box'. A charge lasts 15 minutes, enough time to do at least 5 sweaters!

£6 well spent, and I'd give a ***** review. These garments all look so much smarter, and less worn. I like the fact it is rechargeable - and somewhat safer than the old method of using a razor blade [with risks to both garments and  fingers]
Have you ever tried one of these?

  1. I had one as a birthday present a few years ago. They are brilliant

  2. I have a manual ‘cashmere comb’ which I use on all knitwear. It is more laborious than your clever machine but (ridiculously) feels safer. I am quite clumsy! Anyhow, like you, it brings even my husband’s rusty tufts jumpers back to nearly new.

    1. A "cashmere comb" sounds much more classy than a fuzz buster!

  4. My great uncle insisted that he only had v necked sweaters because they were smart. He also insisted on wearing them back to front because that way he kept his chest warm. It worked for him.

The armpits of my sweaters are also a problem. It looks like the defuzzer is definitely worth a try.

  5. I used to have the battery version of this many years ago, it's surprising the difference a bit of de-bobbling makes isn't it.

  6. We have some of these at the charity where I volunteer and it’s a job that lots of us don’t mind doing! I find it quite therapeutic and it makes such a difference to the garments. Catriona

    1. Perhaps lifting our hands in praise 🎶 has caused added friction!

  8. I wish they had these for carpets. One of my cats constantly scrapped at the carpets at the edges of the room and also on every stair. It has left a lot of rough patches in an otherwise high quality carpet.

  9. I had a battery one a long time ago. Later I bought a set of defuzzers that were laborious to use and I gave up and donated them. Now I'm thinking I need a good plug in or battery defuzzer again.
