I'll Get My Kicks On Route 66!

Nat King Cole sang

If you ever plan to motor west,
Travel my way, take the highway that is best.
Get your kicks on route sixty-six.

Well, I am planning to motor east very shortly, and I shall be going M27,M3,M25,M11...not quite so lyrical. But today, I hit the ripe old age of sixty-six. The next stage of the adventure. I've tried to apply for my Bus Pass, but I need to be in Norfolk before that can be sorted out.

All tips for freebies/perks/concessions available to women reaching State Pension Age will be gratefully accepted!  Thank you

  8. A very happy birthday to you and I hope you both enjoy retirement as much as I do.

https://www.silversurfers.com/ is a general site for over fifties and it has quite a good discount section.

  11. Happy birthday dear Ang. I had it on my list to send you a card but somehow things intervened.

    1. Please don't worry about the card - I value your true friendship and that will last much longer than a paper greeting!

  12. Happy birthday and happy retirement to you both.

I'm sure you will both be finding plenty to occupy you, but perhaps you will be able to do things at a slower pace, than that of a busy Pastor and Pastor's wife.

This will also be an emotional time for you, but your preparations have been so organised and I'm sure this is the case both personally and professionally.

Safe travels to Norfolk - you have so many wonderful memories to take with you and a great deal to look forward to. I hope that you will soon be able to celebrate as a family.

  14. Happy Birthday Angela and very best wishes for your and Bob's retirement.
As someone, also a pastor's wife, who will be venturing on the same journey at the end of the year I will be especially interested in your next life adventures.

  15. Happy Birthday, Angela!
Enjoy not having work obligations cutting into your free time. The choice of how to spend your time is yours now! :)
I'll be turning 70 on the 28th and that's a number that is difficult to get your head around.
BTW, I've been on Rt. 66!

    Hugs!

  17. Happy birthday Angela. I wondered which is the best way to go to Dorset from Norwich and you have just written that. However, we are going to Lyme Regis for our holiday in September so I will need to check if that's the right way. I wonder how long it takes to come up to Norfolk. Best wishes

    1. It's about 200miles - and using those motorways we allow 4½-5 hours, with at least one stop (usually South Mimms) If the traffic is heavy, or there are motorway hold ups, then we stop at Fleet Services and Stansted. It's important to take a proper break (altho since the pandemic, we scuttle in for the loos then return smartly to drink our coffee in the car) The long Dorset/Norfolk journey is something I will not miss!

  18. Happy birthday, Angela! Best wishes as you celebrate both your birthday and retirement. Have a safe drive, even if it isn't along the route mentioned in the song! My family and I drove along a portion of Rt. 66 on our journey to California and there is a stretch of road near my house that is marked as being part of the historic Rt. 66, which I drive on quite often. :)

  19. I have read your blog for quite some time now, always interesting, informative and relevant to the times. I wish Bob and yourself all good wishes for the future and thanks for all you both did to make such a difference in Ferdown and district.
    My Aunt told me this.
Life is a story volumes three
The past, the present and the yet to be
The past is gone and put away
The present we live it day by day
The third and last of volumes three is hid from sight,God holds the key.
Wishing you both all good things as you set off on your next adventure.

  22. Belated Happy Birthday and Happy Retirement. Not sure whether your new area issue bus passes but it's worth checking it out, even though you still travel by car. B&Q Wednesday discount day for 'senior citizens'. Boots the Chemist also have discount deals for 'seniors', as well as Specsavers and once everything opens up again, look out for meals out deals and hairdresser 'senior' days, invariably midweek. Please can you send me your new address when you get settled?.
