Hallelujah!

Every year there is a European competition to find the gelato "flavour of the year" This year it was won by a chocolate, hazelnut gianduja delight, named "Hallelujah"

It does look rather splendid. The Italians are especially delighted that it went on sale on Monday - this was World Gelato Day and the day that the Pope came home from hospital.

And he is known to be very fond of gelato.

In other pontifical news, I have just finished reading Conclave by Robert Harris. Another extremely clever book from this gifted author. I picked it up in a CS a while back. But then Pope Francis went into hospital and I felt vaguely uncomfortable reading about a deceased Pope. But when they said Francis was making a good recovery. I started it, and polished it off very quickly. I did suspect the plot twist at the end fairly early on, but that did not detract from my enjoyment.
I rate this one **** [it will be going back to a CS once I have seen the film!] DO NOT look up the book or film on wikipedia, as it reveals too much of the plot and may prove to be a spoiler for you. Fortunately I only looked on Wiki afterwards!
Anyway I am always glad when a sick person is getting better
Rejoice, rejoice! Or should we spell it Rejo -Ice?

  1. I have read this book twice and was fascinated about how the election of a new Pope is carried out. The older version of the film starring Jonathan Price is also good and I will watch the new version on Prime when it comes down in price a bit. Like you, I guessed the twist in the tale. Catriona

    1. Yes I'm waiting for it on prime too (I'm very mean, and resent paying. But they are usually fairly quick)

  2. It's lovely to hear of a sick person being healed. A lovely lady at my church has been on clinical trials for a procedure for her bone marrow cancer where her stem cells were taken out of her and posted off to Amsterdam where they were modified and then sent back to put back into her. As far as I know, this has been a success so far which is amazing in so many ways!
    That sounds a great gelato!

  3. So wonderful the Pope is well again. I like all Robert Harris books and the film of Conclave is masterly, Ralph Fiennes deserved Best Actor Oscar in my mind, all the cast were brilliant. I did think the film might feel a bit claustrophobic but it didn't at all and kept me engrossed. The gelato looks delicious. Regards Sue H

I think HH being unwell is why Conclave didn't do so well at the Oscars. It's a shame the film left out the clue to the cardinal's 'lived reality' but then they left out so much.

  6. Wonderful ice cream – I'm looking forward to it starting in the sunshine with an ice cream cone in hand, and I like authentic Italian. So good.
I saw the movie in the cinema. It's a good adaptation.
Sometimes, when I see a movie on Prime, I wonder why I didn't see it in the cinema... I sometimes miss out on some really good films there. The big screen – the cinema – when no one is sitting next to you with a bag of chips – is simply wonderful. I love it. I often go in the early afternoon when there aren't many people in the cinema.
Best wishes to you from Viola
Yes, thank God, recovered. We must not forget age and life history. The right to life and the right to death.

    1. Going to the cinema is fun, as you say, it is particularly good when the cinema is almost empty (just a few other "Seniors"!) and a little tub of ice cream while you watch is always a treat. On the other hand, if I watch at home I can pause, go to the loo, make a snack...Even go to bed and watch the second half the next night...

  7. That sounds like a book to look out for. I was happy when Pope Francis began to recover and even left hospital to convalesce at the Vatican. There were some who almost had him buried, initially, but he still has work to do!

  8. Reminds me of the time I went to work at my father-in- law's ice cream factory in Sicily 'Tartan Gelati'! Gianduja was a favourite.

    1. Wow! Great heritage. I think Bob's love of ice cream is because is Italian Godmother owned the Deal Beach Parlour selling frozen treats in Kent

  9. That ice cream looks delicious! I was happy to hear that the Pope was well enough to leave the hospital. Hope he continues to recover. I have not read the book nor seen the movie.
