The Rules Were There For A Reason...

December 2020 -  Rick and Angela - the generous couple who gave up their Christmas morning to cook lunch for around 50 people who would be alone that day - and the team of masked and distanced volunteers who helped get those meals out to the recipients. Following all the covid protocols
April 2021 - Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, sitting alone at her husband's funeral. Following all the covid protocols
November 2021 - where my beloved cousin Gillian spent her 65th birthday, and the kind staff apologised to us that they were unable to give her any sort of party. Visiting was strictly limited, even for the dying.
December 2020. Conservative Party HQ, London. The party  invitation has just been disclosed to the press. Following all the covid protocols????

I am not in the least surprised that many people are desperately sad, and very angry, right now.

  1. Somehow all notion of integrity snd decency was warped and lost in the number 10 offices, and I suspect it would have felt almost impossible to stand against the prevailing culture if you worked there. They seem to have been living in some kind of La la land, impervious to the people they were meant to be serving.

    1. You are right - they seem to have been completely out of touch with the reality of covid.

  2. It is of course outrageous behaviour and I can only shake my head and wonder what has happened to this country and it's so-called political leaders. I am so sorry that you lost Gillian and of course the circumstances are horrible that she endured.

  3. I guess they were of the opinion that the rules didn't apply to them or they believed that rules were meant to be broken.

  4. I feel sad that few of those involved in the disgraceful events have expressed any remorse even though they have now seen the hurt and anger they inflicted. And I am disgusted that so many leading politicians absented themselves from th House yesterday.

  5. Our Golden Wedding came and went with no party, our 48 year old has long Covid which has impacted on her health and work, a friend died in March 2020 in QEH Glasgow and I could go on and on. We currently have the disgraced MP waiting to be removed from her seat very soon because she broke Covid rules, but the Tories didn’t think it applied to them. Even the use of the word “mingle” in the invitation makes me so angry. I thought of our friend’s three daughters on Sunday when Father’s day came and went without him for the 4th time but the rule breakers don’t give a thought to those affected. Karma is a b****h and hopefully will get them all. Catriona

  6. Even if it hadn't been in the Covid lockdown they seem to have existed in a heavy drinking late partying culture. Completely wrong for the people supposed to be running the country. Crates of bottles piled up each morning. They show a complete contempt for all of us.

  7. The fact that those Parliamentary staffers in that Christmas party video were openly laughing and making jokes about flouting the rules is the worst thing, I think. Talk about one rule for them, another for us.

  8. I can never forget that first Christmas lockdown. Delivering grandchildrens' presents by leaving them on the doorstep, along with all the other grandparents doing the same as I drove through the estate, lots of sad faces. Spending that day just me and Mum because I was in her 'bubble'. And you know what having a new baby in the family was like during lockdown! It's no wonder people are angry.

    1. 😥 Yes, it was incredibly hard for all those new babies and their families. No home visits by medics, no support groups [except zoom] no cuddles

  9. It makes me sad that Gillian and thousands of others (and their families) were put through so much.
In the main though, I'm just incredibly angry at the way the 'powers that be' behaved.
All of us 'nobodies' were doing our best to obey the rules whilst still trying to help those who needed us, all the time being laughed at by the very people who had made the rules!
As for the 'Jingle and Mingle' event, the Police said they had no evidence of any rules being broken, so no-one could be prosecuted. Even before the incriminating video emerged, there were photographs of people ignoring the 'keep your distance' rule, even though they were in a room with those very posters on the walls. Surely that was all the proof the Police needed to raise a case, but they didn't bother!
With apologies to the Danish people, 'Something's rotten in the state of Denmark', or rather, something's rotten in the British halls of power!

    1. 😥 Surely the word 'mingle' on the invitation was an incitement to rulebreaking!

  10. Boris was never fit for high office and those that put him there knew he was a loose cannon. That makes all of them culpable in my opinion. Our own local Conservative MP voted in favour of the committee's findings but his reasons include all manner of excuses and a keenness to "move on". They just don't get that moving on is not so easy by those damaged by the last few years of Tory government.
Good riddance to Boris and let's hope enough voters will not vote for more of the same at the next general election.

  11. That image of the Queen, who had been married for 73 years, at her husband's funeral is a most poignant COVID image: in its context and, alas, in contrast.

    1. Isn't it moving - she exemplifies duty and service

  12. Sadly true. DH said then that perhaps the naysayers would come down with covid, a sort of 'natural selection' process.

    Hugs to all!

  13. I have no words, we have all got more common-sense than any of them. I'm glad it has all come out into the open and we now know that we can never trust them again.

  14. It amazes me, that Boris Johnson was hospitalised with Covid, and was nursed by tired, yet dedicated staff. He witnessed their kindness, skill, and struggles. He returned to government and then proceeded to show a lack of gratitude or respect the N H S or duty to the people of this nation, who were sacrificing, and grieving. There is no excuse for his behaviour, or that of his government colleagues who broke the rules

  15. Like Catriona and husband above, we too celebrated our Golden Wedding alone together, and I remarked that when I vowed "for better for worse" I didn't think it would include a pandemic! Here in Canada most of us also followed the rules and missed out on all sorts. We were fortunate personally in that overall, we had a less traumatic isolation than so many people and stayed well. I just don't understand how that lot in London thought it was okay to party!
