Bobby's Girl

I was very fond of this song back in the sixties. I didn't know anyone called Bobby [or Bob] back then. But I did like the tune. It's been my earworm this week, because I've visited the Bobbi Brown beauty counter in Jarrolds for a makeover.
Liz had one recently, and she and Steph encouraged me to book one. I opted for the 20 minute session called "Get ready in 5 minutes". These sessions are free, and at the end, you are given a list of products used. The consultant was very enthusiastic,  and asked what make up I usually wear on a daily basis. I don't - it tends to be Sundays and special events.
She clearly saw me as a challenge, and a teaching opportunity! But it was all great fun. She took her time, working in one side of my face then encouraging me to copy the makeup on the other. For the first time in years I had reasonable eyebrows. And she took a photo for me to send to the girls. Thanks Sarah!
45 minutes later I was on my way to meet Bob with my list in my hand. I had not expected to be perched on the high stool that long - but she had no other appointments [or potential customers browsing the products] so seemed happy to take her time. When I got home I checked her list - it would cost over £200 to get all the products! And it would definitely take me way longer than five minutes to do the make up. But it was fun, and I felt quite glamorous for the rest of the day!
What do you think?

  1. If it takes ten minutes does that matter if you feel good? I'd baulk at £200 though - maybe I'd treat myself to a lipstick! However, I am the world's biggest scruff anyway.

  2. Thank you FC. I have a 'basic' bag of cosmetics already, and I think I will apply them better now. It is a matter of deciding which (if any) of these BB items would be worth adding (or maybe an equivalent, less expensive,) brand. If I wore makeup everyday, I imagine I'd get faster at doing it!

  3. I'd forgotten that all the big Boots and Debenhams used to have people doing make up. Now all out of work I guess.
Well done for sitting still all that time and it was worth it as you look brilliant!

    1. Sara said she was furloughed through lockdown. The other "beauty counters" in the store seemed very quiet. But Jarrolds is one of the few remaining department stores in Norwich. The Debenhams building remains boarded up and unloved

  4. You look great! I'm terrible at makeup and virtually don't wear it anymore- I occasionally put some black kohl eyeliner on or maybe blue. Kx

  5. You look lovely and it’s a treat to have make up applied. I’m low maintenance these days and more so since Covid. I couldn’t imagine spending £200 on make up but I have friends who spend that without even blinking. Happy weekend. Catriona

    1. Ah, blinking...a problem which affects my ability to apply mascara! That and impatience resulting in black streaks on my cheeks

  6. You look very pretty. I rarely wear any make up now.

    1. So much time in lockdown/sheltering in place** when make-up wasn't needed (** another UK/US difference)

  7. I think except for China recently we had the worlds longest lock in in southern Australia near Melbourne, definitely saved on makeup! You have a lovely English rose complexion, sun damage is a problem with us, there was no sunscreens when we were young.

    1. I think my skin would not be happy in the Australian climate. I know your government encourages people to cover up & wear hats & use sun screen. Not just to stay beautiful but more importantly to avoid skin cancers.

    1. Thank you Susan. I was pleasantly surprised when my daughter said such sessions were free!

  9. You look beautiful! Your eyes look bigger and brighter, partly due to your eyebrows being more noticeable, and if I can be direct enough to say, you look younger too!
Get yourself some new make up, in the shades the BB consultant used on you. You can get cheaper stuff, it may not go on quite as smoothly, or have quite the lasting power of BB, but you'd get a similar result!
My grandmother used make up every day, two weeks before she died at the age of 95 she was still 'putting her slap on' as she called it!
My mum also wore make up every day, so it seemed natural to me to do the same.
I never leave the house without make up of one sort or another on, usually just a quick slick of eye shadow, mascara, a tiny amount of blusher, and lipstick. I'm naturally very pale though, so a bit of colour makes me look actually alive!
Every day, the first forty five minutes or so after emerging from the shower is always spent drying and styling my hair and 'putting my face on'. It's a habit now!
Very very occasionally, on a day when I know for sure that I won't be seen by anyone other than immediate family, I put my hair back in an Alice band and leave my face 'naked', but it's not often that I do that!
There's been one day since I was about ten years old that I haven't washed my hair, the day our son was born, and I was in the shower at 6 o'clock the following morning!
If I know I look more or less as good as I can, and I have good perfume on, I can take on anything with confidence!
I'm a great believer in making the most of what we have! X

    1. I am the same way. I have been wearing daily makeup every day since I turned 16 and I am 82 now. Without it my face disappears. Like you if I am home all day, perhaps not, but i have never gone out in public without at least eyeliner, brows, and lipstick. As Shakespeare put it "Vanity, thy name is woman".

  10. Thank you Col for your compliments and helpful advice. Neither my mum nor my gran wore makeup, so it wasn't something I grew up with or bothered about. My girls were keen to try cosmetics, and I've learned a lot from them

  11. I like the fact that you still look natural as well as attractive after your special makeup session. I always used to put on makeup but I got fed up with foundation that had to be taken off with tissue so as to avoid staining washcloths. Now I just put on lipstick, and touch up eyebrows. Some days I even use an eyeliner and a tiny pass with mascara, so my eyes will show up through my glasses!

  12. I think you look younger and more energetic. Mostly your smiling and kind eyes look beautiful!

    Hugs!

  14. You look so lovely here, but then you do anyway. Perhaps ask for BB products for birthday and Christmas presents, if there are some things you would like but can’t justify. Sometimes people are glad of gift suggestions so they know they are definitely getting it right. Nicky Kxx
