Boxing Match #2

Following Sue's post about sorting her freezer, I felt very challenged about tackling my frozen goods. I have let things get a little out of control of late - there were quite a few half -used packs of this and that, and a few yellow-stickered things which I'd bought, frozen promptly, then forgotten about. So I got everything out, did a proper audit, repacked half boxes into smaller labelled containers, and loaded the drawers in a more sensible fashion [separating meat, veg, bread products into different drawers] The Futility Room was quite chaotic, but Bob helped me to quickly list and sort, so everything was only out of the freezer for a very short while
But once it was all done, it was time to sort the Tupperware [none of which is genuine T-ware anymore, mostly lock-n-lock]  I got everything out, and matched all the boxes to their lids.
It isn't that long since I did this - and there were only two 'orphans' at the end of it. A lid to discard, and a base which has gone to the Lathe Palace to be repurposed.
I stacked them neatly, then nested them so they all fitted tidily into the cupboard.
How long this tidiness will last I do not know.

  1. Yes, Ang, this disappearing to Narnai is a major problem. There is obviously something very special for box lids, and boxes there. When do they go? I think it must be at night, as mine start a day all sitting nicely together but by the next day they have done their own thing. Again.

    1. You are right - I think they go out for walks with the odd socks!

  2. Sounds like a lot of sorting and organizing going on in your kitchen!

    1. And recycling, and sending stuff to Charity Shop. And it actually feels like it is making a difference!

  3. Think we all have similar contents on our freezers and cupboards! I mark the tops and bottoms of each container with matching symbols using a waterproof felt tip. Easy to match them up when they go rogue in the cupboard!I'm trying to cut back on plastic and thought about buying some of those glassware containers with silicon lids but wondered about their safety when defrosting?

    1. The marking idea is good [assuming you can find both pieces] And sharpies leave a very durable mark. I got some of the new IKEA 365+ range, where you can get a metal or glass or plastic base and a matching plastic/silicone lid. I have two lids which fit my four bases [these are in different materials and capacities] I got them towards the end of last year. They have thus far proved useful and durable.

  5. I had a mini sort out in the kitchen two weeks ago, as it was getting silly!
Did I honestly need four rolling pins, one of which was specifically for chapatis?
I've swapped my Magimix with our son, he now has my huge XL one, and I have their more normal sized one. That makes a lot more space on my worktop!
I've stuck 'Command' hooks inside a few more cupboard doors, so now my oven gloves are hung out of sight in the wall cupboard next to the oven, my glasses and case are hanging in the wall cupboard above the microwave, and my silicone lids are hidden in the wall cupboard just to the right of the hob, rather than being buried in a drawer!
Now I just need to summon up the energy to sort out the chest freezer in the garage!!! X

    1. We too had a Chapatti roller and board set , a gift from a friend who went to Pakistan. After 20 years it went to a CS, unused (I made chapattis but used my regular pin!)

  6. I have such a hotch potch collection of plastic boxes, some quite ancient, that it's difficult to stack them and I end up having to sort a well rummaged cupboard full embarrassingly often. I'm tempted to donate the whole lot to the charity shops (where they seem to sell quite well) and buy a new collection that stacks properly. The problem with this is that I'm rather attached to some of them (daft, I know) and would find it hard to part with some of the odd shaped ones that have distinctly unique uses.

    1. I know - I have the one my FIL gave me when he bought us our first microwave. And the green one with the avocado decal that was part of cousin Gill's last Xmas present to me before she died. But I did have a major sort & discard before retirement and treated myself to TWO set of nesting square lok&lok, which fulfil most needs for the freezer.

  7. We have a specific cupboard for our plastic boxes. I stack the boxes reasonably sensibly, with their lids on/nearby. Mr FD just puts bottoms and tops randomly so you put food in a pot and then think "where the *** is the lid?!" Every few months I take them all out, match them all up and put them all back again. Hey ho. Love FD xx

    1. Bob stacks freshly washed boxes on the worktop, leaving me to nest and pack them away. And happy marriages work well with such teamwork!

  8. Well done, Ang!
We have a lower cabinet whose bottom shelf iis nearly inaccassible. I bought two long, low plastic bins that fit side by side in that space. The bins pull forward like drawers and thosey contain my leftover and freezer containers. Will send you a phooto if I can find it.

    Hugs!

    1. I picked up the email with the photo. That is one very large collection of containers!

  9. I thought I had finally solved the problem of lids or containers going AWOL, and I do have a deep drawer with mostly identical small square containers, and their lids are stacked in two or three nested oval containers, whose lids are behind them separately. There are also, or once were, 3 small cube shaped containers. Now I have one of those missing and also one oval container, and there is a small oblong container with a missing lid. Large containers for baked goods sit in a cupboard above the fridge and seem to behave there. But I wish I knew where certain spoons and forks got to a few years ago. That's a real mystery and they are part of a set.

  10. The disappearance of these things is indeed a mystery!
