On The Shelf With Jamie

He's back, bish-bash-bosh, with his cheery cooking and family anecdotes, to brighten up Monday evenings [ot Tuesdays, if you like the BBC2 quiz night, so record him for later] We watched the first of Jamie Oliver's new Five Ingredients series.
The premise is that you don't need a great long list of ingredients to turn out easy, tasty, family meals - and you can use the simplest humble items [he loves the word 'humble'] But tnh, I was a little disappointed by this week's offering. 
It is sponsored by Tesco,. so naturally their products are showcased. That's OK - but his Fig Tart - which looks splendid and allegedly serves 8 [doesn't that look like six possible portions to you?] works out at £8.50 for the ingredients. 
We did like the look of his Lemon Tzatziki Chicken - however we were none too sure about his 'genius hack' to get the "crispiest chicken ever, even without a rotisserie oven"
What Jamie did was to prepare the veg etc in a roasting tray and put that on the lowest shelf, and suspend his chicken legs over the tray by squeezing them through the bars of the upper shelf, which held them in place as they cooked.
But look at that shelf - and the gap between the bars- about 2cm. Here is a picture of an oven shelf like mine - with 4cm gaps
An ordinary chicken leg is too slim to be gripped by this shelf. So I couldn't do this trick. I checked my neighbour's shelf [4 cm gap] Furthermore, most 'regular' ovens have this sort of shelf.
If you want a narrow gauge shelf like Jamie has, you need to own an upmarket, costly oven like Gaggenhau or Neff. 
I suppose you might buy a Gaggenhau shelf  which would fit your oven. I suggested to Bob that I could knot the legs onto a length of butcher's twine, like a necklace, and dangle them through the wider slots - but we both felt this was too much faff. [Neff or Faff - you choose!]

And the third recipe was sweet pea pasta. None of the pretty flowers, just frozen peas, pasta, spring onions, cheese, and potatoes [yes, two carbs - his 'double denim' recipe] It's cheesy pasta with peas, Jamie! 
Most of us have been throwing together something like this for years, we do not need a recipe. 
And yes orecchiette pasta does look pretty, but it is the most expensive of the Tesco pasta shapes. [Even if the potatoes cooked with it are 'very humble']
I will watch again next week, and hope Jamie comes up with some recipes which I could replicate within my budget, using my ordinary Belling Oven!

Apparently this show aired in Australia last month - and Jamie's chicken hack left the presenters of their morning show "Sunrise" both 'shocked' and 'mindblown' !!

  1. Of course I had to measure the distance of the spaces between my oven rack! 3 cm! Maybe one would need to buy a set of mini meat hooks to hang the chicken legs (they are available online). Or, use a cooling rack placed on the oven rack. Or the rack from the small table top grill.

    1. What excellent suggestions! Mini meat hooks would be useful. I think the bars on my grill rack are too narrow (the opposite problem) 🍗🍗🍗

    2. To be fair, he did suggest the alternative of just putting the chicken on top of the veg - equally tasty, I would imagine, although perhaps not so photogenic! Nicky

    3. What he said was to lay chicken legs on top of the rack if you can't hang them, so the fat still drips onto veg below. I suppose you could turn them over half way through cooking time to achieve crispy skin all round.

  3. I should give it a watch. The trouble is, inevitably, these recipes don't include enough veg for me. I like at least 3-4 portions of veg with my evening meal if not more! Kx

  4. I do like JO and think he does try hard to make cooking easier for people. I do think though that, like most celebrity chefs, he forgets that we don't all have huge storecupboards full of everything, or even access to a myriad of food shops. In this series, and his last budget one, he doesn't tell me anything I don't already know, but I'm sure his down to earth simple recipes are helpful to younger or less experienced cooks.

  5. Even though the recipe sounds simple, it still needs the oven on for a reasonable time. If you dangle the legs it doesn’t allow any space to use the oven fully to cook something else at the same time. I like lots of veg with my pasta and would not be able to do the double carb because of Norrie’s diabetes. I’m not a JO fan and it’s partly because of the sponsorship element. The Bake Off is annoying me must now with all the Sainsbugs adverts and unfortunately you can’t fast forward them. Quite stormy here today so it’s a day to coorie doon and bet some housework done! Catriona

    1. I agree with you about the full use of oven space [like a pudding or pie cooking on the top shelf, to maximise energy use] And "more veg please" seems a popular response today. Haven't watched Bake Off for a while. I like the phrase "Coorie doon" and may do that myself as it is very wet and windy here.

  6. I think Jamie gets away with quite a lot because his shows have such a feel good factor - who is volunteering to clean those oven shelves I wonder!

  8. I read his cookbooks but don't use his recipes. You could put the chicken legs on a rack and place it on top of the pan of vegetables. Thank you. I enjoy your blog.

  9. Interesting. I had to go measure my oven rack of course, and just as I thought, the gaps are 4cm. I would never have thought of hanging up chicken drumsticks!
