Purple Giveaway

I just love this poem!

red hat lady

Warning - by Jenny Joseph

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit.
You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.
But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

Well, I already have a purple tee shirt, and I certainly hoard pens, pencils and things in boxes [no beermats though!] and I enjoy nibbling [not gobbling] samples in shops, and Bob is very fond of sausages [although not 3lbs at a time]

...but I hate the taste of brandy, I never spit or swear in the street, and I hope I would never steal flowers from someone else's garden.

...however as a further stage in my grand decluttering, and as another Lenten Giveaway, I have decided to put together a little parcel of purple goodies.

[amaranthine, amethyst, blackberry, heliotrope, lavender, lilac, magenta, mauve, mulberry, orchid, periwinkle, perse, plum, pomegranate, violet...what a poetic colour]

  4. Such a pretty collection of trinkets. My Butterfly loves purple. You have inspired me to be a bit more creative in filling their spring baskets this year. Thank you! Just like last week, I would prefer not to be entered in the drawing, but I just had to comment!

  5. Ang, I'm excited about wining your 1st Lent giveaway, but now I'm wishing I entered this one! - I love Purple things and have a friend here who is even more mad on purple than I am. However it isn't fair to enter this one so soon after winning your last generous giveaway.

  10. I remember reading that poem in my teens and plotting my old-age misdeeds! Sadly I developed a cat allergy, so I can never become a crazy cat lady, but a sack of purple is a good replacement!
