Wandering Angles

We once had a friend who was responsible for preparing hymn words for the church data projector. Now and then a spelling mistake crept in. The amateur electricians smiled at "Onward  Christian solders" and as a maths teacher, I liked it when we sang "the angles keep their watch of wandering love"
This year we've added an angel to our Nativity Tableau. Unlike the other figures, created on frames made of old microphone stands and gazebo struts, this figure is based on the ancient laundry bin [replaced when we redecorated the bedroom]
Here's Bob in the workshop, attaching the gold polystyrene head to some shoulders [a length of packaging] on the upturned bin. There are three "vine hooks" - two on the shoulders, and a third halfway down the back. This last helps to adjust the position, so the angel is "bending on hovering wing" over the Holy Family. Bob says it "determines the Angel's Angle of Dangle"
The wings are fixed separately behind, and constructed from a large sheet of card, covered in gold foil and draped in white and gold net from my Fabric Stash.

Almost complete. I just need to pin the Wise Man's robe, it keeps blowing back to reveal the brick on his base - and I've mislaid the gift he had last year [a gold box]
My young neighbour likes the angel, and speculated on who would be added next year. Would it be possible to have a camel standing outside? she asked. No! I told her.
... But having seen Catriona's photo of the wondrous creature made by her husband's Men's Shed group, maybe it could be done after all...

  1. Your nativity scene is both artistic and original in its design. Well done. Love the angles and solders bloopers.

  2. At my old church, we had a brilliant Papiermache cow as part of the scene. I love the new angelic addition! Kx

    1. At our old church, someone nicked the donkey and left it in the garden of the pub up the road!

  3. Maybe just the head of a camel/cow/donkey looking over a stable door in the back ground.

There are whole lines missing on the screens sometimes - church goes very quiet!

  13. Love that your new angel is even "on high"!!

The folks who create backdrops for your local theater would sure love your services!! Oh, and Bob's, too, of course.

    1. It feels strange not being involved in making Nativity costumes this year

  14. Stonking Nativity as usual. At our place- occasionally we will miss entire slides so there is half the congregation moving on to the next verse and the other half silently miming the chorus

    1. We're a small congregation currently without a music group, so we use prerecorded videos which tend to be more reliable than somebody at the back working the slides. But occasionally we have unexpected repeats or random twiddly bits between verses. It all adds to the joy of worship! BTW i'm in awe of your diligent commitment to Messy Church, I know it's out of your comfort zone.
