Fried Or Boiled?

britisheggweekLast week was British Egg Week – and I missed it! Mind you, we did eat some, I just didn’t realise it was their Special Time.

Among the bizarre facts and recipes which were published on the BEW website, I was intrigued by a survey of the nation’s egg eating preferences. Apparently, a person’s favourite way of eating eggs can predict their personality type, their job and even their sex drive, researchers have discovered. Check yourself out!

  • Poached eggs: The average poached egg-eater is likely to have two children and no more than one older sibling. They are found all across the UK and are more likely to be women than men. Eaters are also most likely to be outgoing socially and energetic extroverts. They prefer upbeat, lively music and are probably happier than most.
  • Boiled eggs: The average boiled egg-eater is more likely to be a woman than a man. They could be either working or upper class, and come from anywhere in the UK other than the South East of England. They have a tendency to be more disorganised, and impulsive and run a greater risk of getting divorced.
  • Fried eggs: Fried egg-eaters are most likely to be younger, male and from Scotland. Most frequently found among the skilled working classes and have older siblings. They are open to new experiences, creative, curious and imaginative. They are also more likely to have stronger sex drives.
  • Scrambled eggs: Scrambled egg-eaters are most likely to live south of Birmingham. Scrambled eggs are the favourite choice for those aged 20 to 39. Eaters were more likely than other types to be in managerial or senior-level jobs and also to own their own home. Likely to be less neurotic but also more guarded and less open.
  • Omelettes: A middle class favourite, the omelette is eaten less frequently than other egg dishes and its greatest fans are in Sheffield, Liverpool and Newcastle. Omelette eaters tend to be reliable, well organised and self-disciplined. They are more likely to have tidy homes. Omelette fans may live longer and are less likely to get divorced.

sunshine toastMe? I am just totally eccentric- my preferred method of cooked eggs is “Sunshine Toast” [recipe here]

·Sunshine Toast: Eaten by crazy middle-aged women in the Midlands. Usually with one younger sibling, and very happily married.Creative and frugal they spend a lot of time listening to Radio 4 and planning visits to Norfolk or London.

Bob and I frequently sing along with Chris Evans on Radio 2 as we are getting ready for the day ahead…

“How do you like your eggs in the mornings?”

“I like mine with a kiss!”

  2. Hmmmmmmmm. Well, it seems that I'm MORE likely to get divorced and Mr FD is LEAST likely to get divorced! That's a conundrum!

  3. When I was a child, my grandma used to make what we called 'Egginacup'. It was an egg not quite hard boiled, not too soft, finely chopped up in a cup with salt and pepper! We loved it.

  4. I'm a poached egg lady!!!! Ben and I discovered the wonders of poached egg, ham and cream cheese on toast for special breakfasts years ago... to be honest, now we have the boys, we tend to make pancakes instead, though. I'm interested in your sunshine eggs, as we finally have enough eggs from the hens to eat one each once a week. Yes, you're right - that's not a lot. We discovered that if you poach a fresh egg it stays egg-shaped! Very interesting...

    1. I can't eat the white of egg if poached, fried or boiled- but I can if it's mixed up [scrambled or omelette] or well beaten [meringue or sunshine toast]

Job 6:6 does say "is there any taste in the white of an egg?"so there is a Biblical precedent for our dislike!!

It has caused may an argument in our childhood home as me, mom and two brothers are all the same. eat the yolk and leave a mound of white ! my dad used to moan constantly. funnily the grandchildren are the same so now he moans at the next generation of yolk lovers :-)

    3. I have suddenly remembered the lady whose home we used to go to on a sunday night after church when we were students. We were ALWAYS served meringues, because her kids only ate yolks- so she kept all the whites monday - friday to make weekend meringues!
