Soap Opera

A while ago, Liz and Jon visited Marseilles on holiday, and brought back for me a huge cube of traditional Marseilles soap like this…

marseilles soap

The leaflet with it said “This traditional Marseilles soap is made from 100% natural essential Olive Oil. This family company of savonniers has been making the Marseilles soap since 1900, based on traditional techniques passed on from one generation to the next. Soaps are made using only vegetable oils and no colourants or synthetic substances are added. This exceptional purity renders it beneficial and environmentally friendly.”

I love the soap and its creamy soft lather – but it is getting used up.

The soap has been on the rack in the shower and sometimes I use it instead of shower gel. But the cube has got old and rather dried out – although I find that it still lathers beautifully once wet. Then last week it crumbled into four pieces.

I was loathe to throw it away [the three larger pieces are each about the size of a large cherry tomato]

The sewing machine was out, and so I grabbed a remnant of tulle about 3” x 6” and DSCF1606sewed a little bag. I put the soap in and machined the 4th side.

This, I think, will make the soap usable again until it is all gone! Use it up, wear it out, make it do - or do without!

  1. What a good idea. It reminds me of my grandmother's washing up soap, before the days of 'Fairy'!

  4. I use vegan soap, love a good soap, but this year I am going to attempt to make my own, vegan soap is terribly expensive. Won't look anywhere near as beautiful as your cube!
